My Bicycle Commuting - does honking make an illegal act legal?

In a recent case (the Vivo case) where a cyclist rode on the lane markings of the right turn lane, many argued that he should have ridden on the right turn lane instead. I reasoned that he might have had some bad experiences before when ridding in the lane. A likely scenario is that some cars could have overtook him from the left and cut in dangerously. Last Thursday evening I experienced this!

In his rush to make the turn before the lights turn from green to red, this NUS internal shuttle bus driver overtook me from the left, made the right turn in between the left turning and right turning lanes, and think that a short horn gave him the legal rights to do this! (14 Nov 2013)

My Bicycle Commuting - worry for them

These two whom I believed are from PRC ridding bikes with no rear lights at night, and moving off abreast but the man on the outside right wobble outwards and kenna honked at. The driver must have prepared for that. Instead of drive slower and wait a very short while that won't lengthen his travel time, especially when three of us are at the junction, he/she preferred to honk at the opportunity to do so. Hmmm.. My Bicycle Commuting - Good driving skill?

This driver has good skill to spring out and turn into his proper lane just split second before a bus driving pass on a down slope.

This is also the junction where I encountered a driver who had issue with me. That driver position the car at the middle of the lane but turn out on to the 2nd lane (from the right) and then "swung" back on to the 3rd lane, which I find it awkward. Here you can see that both cars positioned themselves at the middle of the road opening and made their turns into the 1st and 2nd lane respectively. (29 Oct 2013)

My cycling in Singapore experiences - defensive cycling

Trying to restart my blogging on cycling. Recently Jeanette at The Straits Times Blogs mentioned in her article Two wheels for a change that she started riding bicycle to reduce her use of cars. Among the comments, someone displayed unhappiness worrying that her promoting of cycling on road is irresponsible. However, ironically, studies show that the more cyclists, the safer each will be (see More cyclists means fewer accidents, says report, A Virtuous Cycle: Safety In Numbers For Bicycle Riders and my earlier post).

That will take times. Meanwhile, cyclists should put their own safety at very high priority. Here, let me share about some of my thoughts on defensive cycling.

Firstly, my definition of defensive cycling is a way of cycling to achieve

My cycling in Singapore experiences - falls

I thought I didn't have many falls, but when I think back, I recall quite a number of them. Unbelievable! Both in managing to recall so many falls, and my not too bad memory. Thus, I won't bother to list all those near fall incidents. There must be many, and most of them didn't leave impression. I shall only mention those that I have impression. I tried to list them chronologically, but I couldn't remember clearly when each of them happened.

Looking at the long list, I shall only blog about them one at a time. Probably this list can be used as the table of contents, but before I think of proper titles, I'll just put down some keywords to help me remember ... .

  1. Changi Village, racer, car, before the current cycling era
  2. Kim Keat Avenue Blk 256 void deck, inexperienced
  3. Lor 5 Toa Payoh accident, against traffic
  4. Causeway near Malaysia Customs, straight on to the dividing kerb, indecisive
  5. Clementi Road junction raining spectacles breaks, stupidity
  6. Lornie road, rain, skid, most near death case
  7. Lor 7 Toa Payoh, fainted
  8. Near Cathay Cinema, indecisive, inexperience
  9. Slipped behind HDB in Whampoa due to oily liquid, fate
  10. Little India, different traffic culture, poor maintenance
  11. pot hole in grass patch at South East of Toa Payoh and West Coast Park
  12. AMK Ave 8 outside MRT racer taxi, poor maintenance
  13. Approaching Khatib MRT twisted metal rod
  14. Yio Chu Kang & Lentor accident, quite near death
  15. Kallang River Park connector, poor maintenance, most badly hurt

All eggs in one basket

A quick thought I had today. The saying that it is unwise to put all eggs in a basket. However, I think there are situation when this might not be that wise ... .

I am thinking about extreme case where you have only 1 egg. So, is it wise to break it and put a several portions of it into different baskets? Oh, basket leaks, use bowl instead. Still, in this case, these portions have to be consumed soon or else they will be spoilt.
